First-Timer Guide to the Wiesn
Welcome to your first Oktoberfest! Here's everything you need to know.
## When to go
Opening day (third Saturday in September) is chaotic but magical. Weekdays are calmer. Avoid the last Saturday — it's packed.
## What to wear
Tracht (Lederhosen or Dirndl) is not required but strongly encouraged. You'll feel out of place in jeans. Rent if you don't want to buy.
## How tents work
There are 14 large beer tents and 20 smaller ones. Tents open at 10:00 (9:00 on weekends). Last beer served at 22:30 (23:00 on weekends). The party continues outside.
## Reservations
You don't NEED a reservation for most tents, but without one you'll stand. Reserved tables are for food+drink packages, not free entry.
## How much money
Budget €50–80 per day for beer and food. One Maß costs €14–16 in 2026. Cash is king — many stalls don't take cards.
## Getting there
U-Bahn U4 or U5 to Theresienwiese. Don't drive — no parking. Taxi surge pricing after tent close.
